ok-here is where I have deviated from everyone else’s work. Also since the paint layers weren’t thin and smooth only the top most peaks on the wall burnished.ī. I burnished- but I waited until the paint was too dry-it was difficult to get it shiny and therefore just little dark shiny splotches emerged. Since I put my first coat on too heavy there were plenty of low spots to fill!ī. I applied a third coat, again concentrating on filling in the low spots. I am unconventional and tend to swim upstream so here is what I did next:Ī. From here there are many variations-watch the videos and decide for yourself how you will approach it. Once dry (doesn’t take long) go back over with a skim coat concentrating on filling in the low areas and NOT building up. It is ok to leave a few unpainted small areas. This will likely still be your heaviest coat. Put your first coat on using smooth flowing motions-cover the while area but don’t try to get it thick. The way VP works is that as layers are added and dried they get darker where it is heaviest-and since you are troweling on in very “organic” and patterns motions, this creates interesting variations in the color. Believe me, it doesn’t work that way-you will end up using more product needlessly and you will have trouble burnishing-trust me. It makes no difference in the end if you try to use more paint to “build the layers up”. Then they will have to enter the product type you are using-this is important because it is so thick it requires more tint! Once tint is added it must be shaken for an extra amount of time or you will have streaks of white-this stuff is impossible to thoroughly mix at home.Ĥ.

Pick your color, have the sales person do the color matching thingie-don’t use the paint code on the card.

It does take a little more effort on the part of the sales person but it can be tinted to any Behr color (probably any other color as well).

For instance the brochure and everything you read online says you can only choose from the colors in the brochure-THIS IS NOT TRUE! Don’t let any sales person tell you that. The brochure for this stuff is pitiful-I actually ended up shopping for the plaster on the day the Behr rep was in the store-boy did I luck out! He answered many questions that you should be able to find in Home Depot or Behr literature-but you can’t. I worked with a regular trowel and was not able to escape lines in my work-luckily I really wanted a chaotic look so it ended up working out.ģ.

You can still end up with something great but you will have to struggle much to get there. Plan ahead and order it online DO NOT i repeat DO NOT use a regular trowel from a hardware store. Eli uses a double bladed trowel that I’m not familiar with and haven’t been able to find-there may be links on his pages. You will likely have to order it-just google it. It is slightly trapezoid with bevelled edges and rounded corners. Whatever you do, wherever you may choose to cut corners do buy the specialized trowel specific for this job. He works solely with the Behr product and knows so much about it-he demonstrates following label instructions as well as the techniques he has perfected after working with it extensively.Ģ. To keep it simple (and easy) just watch Eli Lucero. There are many experts and videos out there-get on YouTube and what I’ve learned is that there are many variations on the technique and they all produce great results. These are things that I have learned along the way-I will pass this knowledge on to you in hopes that you will minimize your own errors:ġ. The application process is very similar and the results are close enough from a galloping horse! I have found the process to be near fool-proof, cleaner than painting and so much more exciting! Although available worldwide now, it is pricey-so several paint manufacturing companies have come up with their own synthetic formulas. If you aren’t familiar with this product, it is an inexpensive alternative to Italian Marmarino Plaster that has been available in Europe for centuries. This ain’t my first rodeo but I still have the tendency to apply too much product on my first coat! In spite of the fact that I have tirelessly watched Eli Lucero’s fabulous technique videos to ad nauseum, I still can’t control myself when applying that first coat.
